Today, April 24, 2026, is the one-year anniversary of the launch of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game that immediately catapulted to being one of the most beloved and talked about games of 2025. It went on to earn more GOTY awards than any other game (the most recent of which was awarded last week) and has now reached over 8 million copies sold, according to developer Sandfall Interactive.

Sandfall announced the milestone on the game's official X (formerly Twitter) account, thanking players for the support they have given Sandfall and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 since the RPG launched last year, saying that it is "thrilled, and honestly still quite overwhelmed" to announce the news.

The meteoric rise the game has had over the last 365 days is the kind of story you love to see in the video game industry, especially since most of the news revolves around how negative things are. It's always uplifting to see an independent team like Sandfall find success both critically and commercially.

But now that we're one year out from the game's launch, and it has seemingly accomplished everything and then some that Sandfall Interactive could have hoped it would achieve, the question turns to whether Sandfall can do it again, and how it might look to do it again.

Last year, Sandfall confirmed that Expedition 33 was the beginning of a Clair Obscur franchise, and while we've had some great free updates in the time since its launch, we've not had any official expansions or any real sign that there would be any DLC coming in the near future.

It would be great to hear about what Sandfall has planned sooner than later, but since we've only just reached the one-year mark since Clair Obscur's launch, the reality is we're only really at the beginning of the next phase for Sandfall. Unless some kind of DLC is already in the works, if the team is moving on to something totally new or a proper sequel to Expedition 33, we'll likely be waiting a while to see what Sandfall has been working on.

One thing's for sure. Whenever Sandfall is ready to show off its next game, the entire industry will be waiting with bated breath to play it from the moment we see the first teaser.
