It's been a big week for the Call of Duty franchise. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was finally revealed, and alongside it came the confirmation that the franchise will finally leave the previous console generation behind, with Warzone and Modern Warfare 4 both leaving PS4 and Xbox One behind. Now, two new ratings from South Korea's game ratings board has players thinking there's another major announcement coming, though it may not be what it seems.
Two new ratings for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 spotted on Reddit has players wondering if this is signaling new remasters for the two games. It's not the first time remasters for these games have been claimed to be on their way from users online, and it should be noted that its worth taking all of these rumours with a grain of salt.
That said, what makes the speculation different this time, other than the fact that a recently filed rating is something a little more substantial than someone just yelling out on the internet, is that it comes shortly after a report about a resurgence of retro Call of Duty titles.
Last month, after we'd learned that new games in the franchise would no longer be coming to Xbox Game Pass right away, a report from PC Gamer pointed to several older games from the series joining the service.
Now, it's important to remember that the PC Gamer report doesn't mention anything about them being remasters, but both of the first two Black Ops games are over a decade old. They might not be getting remasters on the scale of the Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 remasters, but it's possible they're getting some TLC before getting slapped on the front of Game Pass, if that is the plan.
It's also of course worth noting that neither of the new ratings has the word 'Remastered' attached to the title. So maybe there's been some work done to make both games look as good as they can on current console hardware.
Again, take all of this with a grain of salt. It's very possible these dots aren't connected at all. But it's also Summer Game Fest time, the time of year when there's always something that leaks out a tad early that flies under the radar until it's revealed at one of the upcoming showcases. We'll know whether or not there's something here in the next couple of weeks.
