The CPU death saga continues, and it's concerning considering how many CPUs the owner of the cafe has already lost.
Cafe Owner Reports 10% CPU Deaths; Out of 150 Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs, 15 Died, But This Time, On ASUS Motherboards
The Ryzen 9800X3D failure reports appear to be giving a tough competition to Intel's 13th/14th-gen high-end CPUs, which witnessed widespread instability issues. We have already reported numerous Ryzen 9800X3D death reports, which mostly occur on ASRock motherboards, but it appears that the problem might not be just ASRock motherboards, since this time, every death occurred on ASUS motherboards.
The Redditor u/RealisticLoad3327 reports that he owns an internet cafe and purchased 150 Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs earlier this year. He used the ASUS B650M-AYW WiFi motherboard for the systems, which appears to be a decent budget motherboard. His systems reportedly use 850W 80+ Gold PSUs, which in this case are from Huntkey. The PSU is often considered to be pretty bad, so his PSU might be the actual culprit. But still, we have seen that in most cases, this isn't the case.
Out of 150 bought units, he already witnessed the death of the 15th Ryzen 9800X3D CPU. Considering he started deploying those in March, the failure rate is nearly 1.6 CPUs every month. According to the cafe owner, the CPU failed at random intervals, typically every one to two weeks. He says he never had such a "terrible" experience before, which is understandable. The number of death reports of the 9800X3D CPU is staggering and concerning.
The user said that he didn't even turn on PBO or any overclocking. As far as his motherboard BIOS goes, he appears to be using the BIOS 3283 (98.81.0), which is from September. So, a pretty new BIOS version as well, but not the latest. However, this BIOS version was released to "improve" system stability, but we don't know how many deaths he saw after updating to this one. Nonetheless, operating on an older BIOS alone does not justify CPU failures, and sometimes it appears that it's the CPU that is pulling more voltage than required.
AMD and its board partners haven't yet found the reason why this actually happens. It has been nearly a year, and we are still here, seeing multiple deaths of Ryzen 9800X3D.
