A new Proton-CachyOS update can automatically download NVIDIA DLSS DLL files when using Optiscaler, allowing AMD users to enable FSR 4 in more games.

Linux Gamers Can Now Enable AMD FSR 4 in More DLSS-Only Games Thanks to Proton-CachyOS Update

Linux gaming has taken another step forward, thanks to a new update that changes how one can enable FSR 4 in games. The new update just dropped for Proton-CachyOS, which allows the compatibility layer to automatically download and create the DLSS-related files required by the Optiscaler, which makes it easier for AMD users to access FSR 4. This will now be available in games that were previously limited to just NVIDIA's DLSS upscaler.

For many Linux gamers, getting advanced upscaling technologies working often involves manually copying DLL files and such workarounds that includes configuration the launch parameters. The latest improvement aims to simply this process significantly. As per the report, the update comes from a recently addressed issue in Proton-CachyOS. Previously, users were encountering a problem when combining Optiscaler with FSR 4 upgrade options where the required DLSS DLL files were not created automatically.

Without these files, Optiscaler had nothing to hook into, which prevented FSR 4 from functioning in games that only exposed DLSS options. The new fix ensures that Proton-CachyOS can now download and generate the necessary DLSS input files automatically. These include components like nvngx_dlss.dll, nvngx_dlssd.dll, and nvngx.dlssg.dll. These are commonly used by games that offer DLSS upscaling and frame generation.

When present, Optiscaler can intercept those calls and can redirect them to AMD's FSR 4 implementation. This is why users won't have to launch games multiple times with different settings to generate the required files before enabling FSR 4. For gamers, this brings expanded compatibility. Some titles only expose DLSS upscaling, leaving AMD users without access to equivalent technologies. With the new Proton-CachyOS update, Optiscaler can more easily use those DLSS pathways as an entry point for FSR 4.
