PC Gamer has just published a story revealing that remakes for Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 are reportedly in development at Wizards of the Coast.

PC Gamer's source specifically mentioned Baldur's Gate 2 because Kevin Martens, Co-Lead Designer of the 2000 game at BioWare, is reportedly working on the project. Martens, who has also worked on Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age: Origins, World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, Destiny 2, and Marathon, joined Archetype Entertainment in November 2024 as a Creative Lead to contribute to the new sci-fi IP Exodus. However, he is now focused on the Baldur's Gate 2 remake. PC Gamer speculates that this implies there is another team remaking the original Baldur's Gate, since BG2 is a direct sequel, and it would not make much sense to remake it on its own.

This is in preparation for the inevitable Baldur's Gate 4, which is likely to be still far off. Last we heard, in March 2025, Dan Ayoub, Senior Vice President of Digital Games at Wizards of the Coast's parent company Hasbro, teased that many companies expressed interest in continuing the saga and that news would be coming "in short order". It's been fifteen months and not a peep, though, unless we count the announcement of the Baldur's Gate 3 HBO TV series in development by Craig Mazin.

The remakes of the classics would allow the chosen game studio to take its time designing BG4, which will have to contend with a very tough comparison to the record-breaking Baldur's Gate 3 by Larian Studios (which is now busy with a new installment in the Divinity franchise). The remakes should go faster, but that doesn't mean we'll get them anytime soon, especially if they have to meet the high polish quality bar set by BG3. Still, it's great to hear that Wizards of the Coast is not simply sitting idly on the IP as they have done for twenty years between BG2 and BG3.
