A bad batch of MacBooks would typically be resolved with a quick software update, but the latest M5 Max models don’t fall in that category, as some of them are showcasing inconsistent multi-core performance in a variety of benchmarks. One YouTuber has noticed this behavior, and his investigation reveals that others are also complaining about it. Assuming you are also experiencing the same erratic performance, the best remedy is to seek an immediate replacement from Apple, and knowing the company’s legendary customer service, it will happily oblige.
The immediate conclusion would be that the M5 Max is thermal throttling on the MacBook Pro, but Apple Silicon is designed to maintain performance at 100+ degrees Celsius
The high-end portable Mac used by the YouTuber Zip Tie Tech highlighted this performance issue, while also mentioning that, so far, Notebookcheck is the only text-based technology media outlet that has faced a similar problem. Even running the M5 Max MacBook Pro in High Power mode didn’t isolate the problem, which means the only solution remaining is to receive a brand new unit for re-testing. Zip Tie Tech reports that, out of six people he has spoken with, two are reporting inconsistent multi-core performance.
In a boatload of benchmarks, the M5 Max shows a 41.5 percent delta in the scores, and since we have already reported that the chipset can operate at higher temperatures of 105 degrees Celsius without thermal throttling when running sustained CPU workloads, it is clear that the problem lies elsewhere. The bad news is that Zip Tie Tech couldn’t get to the bottom of it, but the good news is that the new M5 Max MacBook Pro unit Apple sent over performs according to expectations.
For those consumers who are about to get their pitchforks ready, let us talk numbers. Assuming Apple has shipped one million M5 Max MacBook Pro models this quarter, and even 1 percent of them were bad batches, that would still mean that 10,000 units have been affected, which is a huge number. The fact that there have been only a few cases reported so far indicates that Apple’s quality control is still platinum-level, and those who are currently experiencing haphazard performance should opt for replacement without wasting a single thought.
