ASUS has started an internal review on the reports concerning AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D failure on its AM5 800-series motherboards.

ASUS Makes First Official Statement Regarding Reports of AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Deaths On Its AM5 800-Series Motherboards

We recently reported several instances of ASUS X870E and X870 motherboards affecting the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs. Going through Reddit, you can still find several reports where AMD's Ryzen 9000 CPUs, especially the 9800X3D, have been affected on ASUS's 800-series motherboards.

ASUS has now made its first official statement, in which the company says that it has started an internal review process regarding the reports, and in the meantime, asks all users to update their boards to the latest BIOS to ensure smooth and stable operation. For those who have been affected, ASUS has asked users to contact their customer service, which is listed in the statement below:

We are aware of recent reports concerning AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs and ASUS AMD 800-series motherboards, and we have initiated an immediate internal review. Our teams are conducting preventive checks on product compatibility and performance, working closely with AMD to validate reported cases and ensure ongoing stability and quality. We are looking to provide timely solutions to ensure our products and services meet expected standards.

Users are also advised to update their ASUS AMD 800-series motherboard to the latest BIOS via ASUS EZ Flash or BIOS Flashback to help ensure system stability; we provide an official technical support FAQ with detailed instructions.

Customers who are affected or have concerns are encouraged to contact ASUS customer service for direct assistance. We take this matter seriously and value our customers’ trust, and we remain committed to transparency and to ensuring our products can be used with confidence.

It's not just ASUS that has been facing troubles with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D; ASRock has been in the spotlight for several months now, too. Since the 9800X3D's launch, several reports have popped up of AMD's Ryzen 9000 CPUs dying on their 800-series products, especially the higher-end X870E and X870 series. In our own testing, we have failed to reproduce the error and found no issues, but we won't dismiss the user reports either, since there's visual evidence of processors dying and also leaving burn traces on the socket itself, and the very prominent underside CPU bulge.

The problem is that no one has gotten beneath the issue so far. The first cases were reported back with the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and those too were also with an ASUS 600-series motherboard. At the time, the SoC voltage was reported to be the issue, and similar rollouts to address the heightened voltages are already pushed out by motherboard vendors, but despite that, it hasn't really solved much.

This could indicate that either users are still running an older BIOS that doesn't fix the SoC voltage spikes, or something else on either the motherboard or the processor side. With that said, the failure rate is still reported as lower than Intel's 13th and 14th Gen lineup, and the warranty claim process for AMD chips is very smooth, so users don't have to wait a long time to secure a replacement. The same goes for motherboard vendors who are actively and speedily replacing affected customers.
