In an announcement that largely came out of the blue, and despite the many assertions to the contrary by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's current CEO, Tim Cook, is preparing to step down as soon as September 2026.
Even so, Cook is not heading into the proverbial sunset, but would stay on in an advisory and ceremonial capacity on Apple's board.
Apple is now heading towards a high-stakes transition of power at the highest possible echelon
Back in November 2025, Reuters and Financial Times both reported that Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, was likely to step down in 2026 after well over a decade at the helm of one of the largest corporate behemoths in the world.
Those reports, however, were fiercely contested by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who continued to maintain that Cook was not going anywhere just yet. Interestingly, Gurman concurred with at least one part of those reports: that Apple's hardware chief, John Ternus, would be the favored choice to succeed Tim Cook when he does step down.
Fast forward to today, and Apple has just announced Tim Cook's transition to a much more subdued role at Apple come fall:
"Apple announced that Tim Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors and John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become Apple’s next chief executive officer effective on September 1, 2026."
The company went on to note in its press release:
"Cook will continue in his role as CEO through the summer as he works closely with Ternus on a smooth transition. As executive chairman, Cook will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world."
Of course, the appointment of John Ternus does not really come as a surprise. After all, Cook has been personally grooming Ternus for this role for quite a while now, giving him oversight over Apple's design team in addition to his existing role as the hardware head honcho by the end of 2025.
This role expansion was as much a declaration as Apple would allow at that time, loaded as it was with potent symbolism. After all, Apple's design team head has historically enjoyed a lot of prominence within its corporate structure.
And before you ask, Johny Srouji, the force behind Apple silicon, will be the new Chief Hardware Officer, while the current Hardware VP in charge of Product Integrity, Tom Marieb, will step into Ternus' former shoes as the head of engineering. Marieb would report directly to Srouji.
