If you lost or damaged your photos and struggle to find them, Apple has you covered with the new Recovered album. This album will work alongside the Recently Deleted album but not replace it. The feature was rolled out after the recent controversy about an iOS 17.5 bug that led to old deleted photos of users reappearing due to database corruption. The upgrade is part of the iOS 18 roll-out and will help users retrieve previously lost files.
Apple's New Recovered Album Feature in iOS 18 would help users fetch back lost or damaged files
With the iOS 18 update, the Photos app seems to have been revamped, with a new feature added to help you access otherwise inaccessible content. With the Recovered album, users can recover lost or damaged pictures that are still on their devices. This new functionality will come to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.
Users only have to update to the latest software version, and the device will be automatically scanned for any videos or photos that remain in the database but cannot be seen, apparently due to database corruption. Photos can also be lost if not properly saved in the Photos Album.
The Recovered album is displayed when recovered files are present and would not appear otherwise. The new album can be found in the Photos app by opening the Photos app > Scrolling to Utilities > Tapping Recovered > Authenticating through Biometric verification, and Selecting the pictures you want to restore to the photo library. You can also choose to delete the recovered files permanently.
Users should not confuse this with the Recently Deleted Album, where your deleted pictures can be recovered within 30 days of deletion. This would be a separate album dedicated to recovering lost or damaged content and an additional feature working alongside the existing one.
The new feature added in iOS 18 could be a response to the controversy regarding a bug in iOS 17.5 that led to images that had long been deleted or lost reappearing. Apple addressed the concerns by suggesting that database corruption caused the images to come up again, as they were still on the database even when deleted. Including the recovery option gives users greater control over their content, which would help ensure a more transparent data retrieval process.
