Apple's first foldable, tentatively dubbed the iPhone Ultra, is now finally picking up pace when it comes to the typical pre-production calibrations, bringing with it an onslaught of juicy tidbits that are able to pass through Apple's sprawling, albeit sieve-like, supply chains.
Now, fresh tidbits indicate that the iPhone Ultra will sport a dedicated vapor chamber as well as Samsung's M14 OLED screen instead of the 10-bit M16 one.
Apple iPhone Ultra will miss out on Samsung's bleeding-edge OLED panels but come equipped with a dedicated vapor chamber
According to the tipster Schrödinger, Apple's upcoming iPhone Ultra will sport Samsung's M14 OLED panel. On the other hand, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will come equipped with M16 OLED tech, which is a native 10-bit panel that swaps out blue fluorescent OLED material for blue phosphorescent material, entailing a meaningful jump in efficiency.
Intetestingly, the base iPhone 18 will either sport an M14 OLED panel similar to the one on the iPhone Ultra, or go with M12+ OLED tech, which is a fine-tuned version of the M12 panels that debuted with the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S23 series.
Meanwhile, the Weibo-based tipster Fixed Focus Digital has just disclosed in a new post that the iPhone Ultra's production cadence remains on track for a tentative September 2026 launch despite experiencing some early-stage "ramp-up difficulties."
Do note that the tipster had indicated towards the end of May that Apple was facing difficulties in mounting components onto the iPhone Ultra's PCB via what's known as the Surface-Mount Technology (SMT).
Interestingly, the Weibo-based tipster added in today's post that the iPhone Ultra will sport a dedicated vapor chamber, which should allow for an impressive thermal performance. This comes as Apple's apex iPhone model is all set for compromises elsewhere, which include skimping on Face ID, a telephoto camera, MagSafe tech, a physical SIM card slot, and the Action button.
Finally, we should point out that the well-known tipster Ice Universe published the picture of an iPhone Ultra dummy unit earlier today, showing one of just two color options - White and Deep Blue - that the foldable is expected to flaunt this fall.
