Apple Is Working On Its Custom H3 Chip, Along With a New Pair Of AirPods, Both Of Which We Might See As Early As 2026

New AirPods with H3 are reportedly in development, with Apple possibly launching both next year

The AirPods Pro 3 comes with a bevy of changes and improvements when compared to the AirPods Pro 2, but Apple’s latest wireless earbuds defied rumors when the company announced that they feature the previous-generation H2 chip instead of the H3. While failing to introduce a more advanced silicon might be disheartening to some, a new report states that Apple is not just working on this custom chip, but also a new pair of AirPods.

New H3 chip to cut down on latency while improving audio quality and Active Noise Cancellation on the AirPods Pro, Apple is working to bring cameras to its higher-end wireless earbuds

Not much about the H3 has been mentioned in Mark Gurman’s latest ‘Power On’ newsletter, other than Apple improving the audio quality and reducing the lag, though there will likely be a ton of other benefits. If the company can bring twice the noise cancellation to the AirPods Pro 3 without a chip upgrade, imagine the possibilities when the next AirPods arrive with the H3?

Now, the question remains which exact AirPods model will be outfitted with the new chip? According to the report, Apple is working on the AirPods 5, which will directly succeed the AirPods 4, so we expect to see both the regular variant and the one that supports Active Noise Cancellation. Both of these models are expected to be treated to the H3 chip, but there is one other upgrade expected to be added to the newer AirPods Pro 4, which is cameras.

With the rollout of Apple Intelligence, the sensors present on the AirPods Pro 4 will gather data, which will then be sent to iPhones or the Vision Pro. Strangely, there is no mention of any health-focused feature on the AirPods Pro 3, suggesting that we will not be getting anything other than a heart-rate sensor.

Of course, the primary reason to upgrade to the AirPods Pro 4 will be better audio quality, but you can still enjoy that with the AirPods Pro 3, which are currently available to purchase for $249 on online retailers like Amazon.
