A portion of Apple’s focus is invested in foldable iPhones, with the latest report claiming that the company is testing various prototypes in the hopes that one of them passes the quality control phase so that it can undergo mass production. Unfortunately, there are several design problems in today’s foldable smartphones, which is one reason why Apple has been so hesitant to jump on the same bandwagon as the Android squad, but its efforts persist in developing the best version it can.

A foldable iPhone launch can happen in 2026, assuming Apple can address the design problems and bring the price to an acceptable range

The two biggest problems, according to The Information, that are preventing Apple from proceeding with a foldable iPhone launch are finding a way past the durable hinge design and the screen creasing that is formed when a device is completely unfolded. At this stage, two or more prototypes are being developed, but their form factor details are yet to be revealed, with an unnamed source claiming that the launch is not expected to happen in 2024 or 2025.

Even with the prototyping in its early stages, Apple has reportedly been in talks with at least one component manufacturer about becoming a member of the supply chain. The latest information does not mention the name of this company, but previous reports have stated that Samsung and LG had sent Apple foldable display samples. However, if the California-based giant is dissatisfied with the unique iPhone’s durability or other problems persist, it might cancel development completely.

It is also a matter of pricing, as the company might feel that consumers may not feel attracted to a foldable iPhone if it carries a hefty tag, as they could simply purchase a ‘candy bar’ version and be satisfied with the experience. Apple has explored the possibility of making foldable iPads, but those would launch only after the OLED iPad Pro models arrive later this year. However, the same issues mentioned above would be applied to the firm’s tablets, so the primary concern is to scale this problem and then move on to mass production.

Apple’s recent Q1 2024 earnings are proof that the California-based titan has little reason to jump into the foldable smartphone space, but it will eventually have to push forth with a launch since its competitors are slowly but surely bringing in more affordable versions that will take market share away from its rival.
