Apple Watch shipments confirmed by research firm

Apple’s Q1 2017 earnings call revealed the company’s list of records, and out of those records, Tim Cook highlighted the fact that the demand during the holidays was so strong that the company wasn’t able to keep up with it. The Chief Executive also reported that the company’s Apple Watch models saw a record quarter during this holiday season, but because Apple doesn’t release sales numbers, it was up to an independent research firm to do what it does best.

“We estimate Apple shipped a record 5.2 million smartwatches worldwide and captured a dominant 63 percent marketshare in Q4 2016, rising a steady 2 percent annually from 5.1 million units in Q4 2015.

Demand for Apple’s new Watch Series 2 as a holiday-season gift in Western markets was surprisingly strong and it enabled Apple to clear a large backlog of smartwatch inventory during the quarter.”

The new data also shows that the smartwatch industry was up 1 percent year-over-year to 8.2 million in 2016. The reason for that growth is thanks to the impressive Apple Watch’s success during the holiday quarter. Apple also managed to surpass Samsung for the ‘Q4 2016 top smartphone vendor’ achievement, even though the Korean tech giant managed to sell more phones than Apple in the entire year.

As far as smartwatches and wearables, Apple clearly has a commanding lead because Samsung reported just 800,000 smartwatch shipments during the holiday quarter, down 38 percent year-over-year from 1.3 million in Q4 of 2015. Overall, Apple reported the following from its Q1 2017 financial results, with the company ecstatic over its performance in this particular quarter.
