Apple wants you to keep your iPhone 18 Pro as clean and pristine as ever

Apple's planned debut of its iPhone 18 Pro lineup is fast approaching, with mere weeks left until the high-profile launch spectacle kicks off in early September.

Naturally, as the proximity to the launch event increases, so does the supply chain's confidence in what the next-gen iPhone Pro duo would look like, and a consensus now appears to be forming around a thicker camera plateau to cater to the lineup's advanced camera sensors.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro duo will likely sport a heftier camera plateau to house a 48MP ultra-large camera sensor that reportedly comes with a variable aperture optionality

We already know that Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will sport a 48MP triple-camera setup, replete with a variable-aperture main camera, an ultra-wide sensor with enhanced optical image stabilization, and a periscope telephoto sensor.

All of these advanced camera sensors, however, come at the cost of precious internal volume, necessitating increased girth for the iPhone 18 Pro duo.

First, the YouTuber Vadim Yuryen detailed back in April that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro duo will sport a sizable camera bump, with the total thickness (including the camera bump) of the iPhone 18 Pro Max increasing to 13.77mm vs. 12.92mm on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Then, the Weibo-based tipster, Digital Chat Station, corroborated the increased girth for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, explaining that the "48MP ultra-large sensor with a variable aperture" needs additional housing capacity.

Today, another Weibo-based leaker, Fixed Focus Digital, is out with a fresh corroboration, noting that the iPhone 18 Pro duo's camera-related upgrades will expand the thickness of the "aluminum alloy back panel," or the camera plateau, by over 2mm.

Do note that Bloomberg's Mark Gurman enticed Apple fans recently by disclosing that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will offer "some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup’s history."

We already know that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will come equipped with Samsung's M16 LTPO+ OLED tech, which is a native 10-bit panel that swaps out blue fluorescent OLED material for blue phosphorescent material, entailing a meaningful jump in efficiency that is further bolstered by the display's ability to dynamically adjust its refresh rate, notching it up to 120Hz for gaming or smooth scrolling and bringing it all the way down to 1Hz when viewing a static image.

Also, over the past few weeks, we've received persistent rumors regarding a supposedly smaller Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, achieved by moving some components of the Face ID module below the display layer. A MacWorld source adheres to this view, as does Ice Universe.

Even so, Digital Chat Station has continued to maintain that the iPhone 18 Pro duo will sport minimal changes in relation to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, with upgrades whittled down to the A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture camera setup, and a larger battery.

Additionally, the iPhone 18 Pro duo will come equipped with Apple's new C2 modem that unlocks support for 5G mmWave as well as a host of satellite-connectivity-related features.

Also, the iPhone 18 Pro and its Pro Max companion will come in four distinct color options: Dark Gray, Dark Cherry, Light Blue, and Silver. And, to avoid the color fading issue that has plagued the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, Apple will use a new approach to refine the aluminum for the frame, which involves "lowering the fusion point of the mixture and preventing the formation of a resin structure on the electrode surface," unlocking enhanced corrosion resistance.

Finally, bear in mind that Apple's Tim Cook declared just last week that memory prices, which are a function of scarcity, have now become "unsustainable," and that price hikes have become "unavoidable" for Apple. Gurman then added to the supposed urgency by declaring that the planned price hikes for the iPhone 17 lineup might materialize within days alongside Apple's 'Back to School' sales. As for the iPhone 18 Pro, recent estimates suggest it will start retailing for $1,399 vs. the $1,099 base price for the iPhone 17 Pro.
