AI Powered Custom Emojis rolling out with iOS 18 at WWDC

With the WWDC just around the corner, Apple is finally ready to shine on the AI front and showcase the new integrations it is planning to bring with iOS 18. While the generative tools are to extend across apps, a new report unveils a standout custom feature powered by artificial intelligence. Apple intends to bring the new utilities with a unique focus point, which is to incorporate tools that users can use in their daily routines and interactions. Among the many new capabilities tested, the ability to create custom emojis is the one that 'stands out.'

Alongside the existing set of emojis offered on Apple devices, the company is now stepping up its emoji game by adding a new generative AI tool for customized, more realistic emojis

According to Mark Gurman's recent Power On Newsletter, Apple is planning to introduce a range of changes with iOS 18 and macOS 15. Apart from improving the home screen customization, upgrading the Notes app, and smart recap for notifications, the tech giant is focusing on a tailored experience for emojis on the go. The emojis would be created according to the text tone and for specific occasions.

Gurman mentioned that Apple intends to go beyond the given set of emojis and add a personal touch to the messages. He states:

"One standout feature will bring generative AI to emojis. The company is developing software that can create custom emojis on the fly based on what users are texting. That means you’ll suddenly have an all-new emoji for any occasion, beyond the catalog of options Apple currently offers on the iPhone and other devices."

Apple releases a new set of emojis with the iOS update annually, as it did with iOS 17.4. However, the AI-generated graphic icons do not require users to wait for the yearly upgrades, as the company intends to make the process more continuous and seamless. With the new tool, users can create emojis that express their emotions more aptly.

While the feature might not be a huge deal in terms of scale, a custom emote tool like this can often create inappropriate graphics. Meta experienced this when it first introduced AI-generated stickers. So, given the tendency of these AI tools to sometimes get out of hand, we hope Apple will implement the necessary restrictions to ensure they are not abused.

Furthermore, Siri would be getting a voice upgrade and will have more human-sounding interaction while the developer tools such as the Xcode are to get AI advancements as well.
