Apple Temporarily Disables Walkie-Talkie on Apple Watch Due to Eavesdropping Vulnerability
Apple introduced Walkie-Talkie for the Apple Watch with watchOS 5 last year. Now, the feature has made it to the news once again with a vulnerability which could allow someone to listen to your conversations. The good news, for now, is that Apple has disabled the Walkie-Talkie feature temporarily until the vulnerability is fixed. Let’s dive in to see some more details on the exploit and how it can cause privacy concerns.
Walkie-Talkie on Apple Watch Disabled Temporarily Due to Eavesdropping Bug
As we have mentioned earlier, Apple has disabled Walkie-Talkie on the Apple Watch this morning due to an unknown exploit that can allow someone to listen to your conversations without consent. Apple told TechCrunch that it is aware of the issue and it is working to solve it. In addition, the company also apologized to users for the inconvenience.
We were just made aware of a vulnerability related to the Walkie-Talkie app on the Apple Watch and have disabled the function as we quickly fix the issue. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and will restore the functionality as soon as possible. Although we are not aware of any use of the vulnerability against a customer and specific conditions and sequences of events are required to exploit it, we take the security and privacy of our customers extremely seriously. We concluded that disabling the app was the right course of action as this bug could allow someone to listen through another customer’s iPhone without consent. We apologize again for this issue and the inconvenience.
According to Apple, the bug requires a specific sequence of events in order to be activated. So it’s not something that anyone can do like the FaceTime bug we saw earlier this year. The Walkie-Talkie app is non-functional as of now and will continue to be in the state until Apple eradicates the vulnerability.
In addition, we’re not clear if Apple will apply a server-side fix or release a new software update to tackle the Walkie-Talkie issue. Nonetheless, the fix will arrive sooner or later. There will be more to the story, so be sure to stay tuned in for the full story.
This is all for now, folks. What are your thoughts on the Walkie-Talkie issue? When do you think the exploit will be resolved? Let us know in the comments.
