The NFC chip inside iPhones is used for Apple Pay, the company’s contactless payments system used by a multitude of merchants all around the world. Unfortunately, third-party developers were unable to use the feature and offer their own payment systems until today, when Apple made the announcement official. Following incessant pressure to open up NFC payments to rivals by the EU, the technology giant has willingly decided to extend its arm to developers in the U.S. and other countries. In this manner, apps can provide contactless payments using new APIs instead of being forced to use Apple Pay or Apple Wallet.
The feature will be made available with the official release of iOS 18.1
By opening up its NFC chip, developers can accept payments for their in-store payments, but the possibilities are endless. This change can be used to develop digital car keys, hotel keys, home keys, transits, student IDs, and so much more. Developers will gain access to new APIs and use the Secure Enclave inside the iPhone. This is a certified chip that stores sensitive information directly on the device itself. Apple has explained how developers can use the NFC chip below while also mentioning which regions will be the first to get it.
“To incorporate this new solution in their iPhone apps, developers will need to enter into a commercial agreement with Apple, request the NFC and SE entitlement, and pay the associated fees. This ensures that only authorized developers who meet certain industry and regulatory requirements, and commit to Apple’s ongoing security and privacy standards, can access the relevant APIs.
The NFC and SE APIs will be available to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. in an upcoming developer seed for iOS 18.1, with additional locations to follow. Developers and users will continue to have access to the easy, secure, and private experience of Apple Pay and Wallet.”
As stated above, accessing the Secure Enclave inside the iPhone will happen with iOS 18.1, a future update that will also bring Apple Intelligence for compatible devices. While entering into a commercial agreement with Apple, developers have to pay the associated fees. Even then, the company states that only authorized developers who have met certain conditions will gain access to the new APIs.
