Apple has always been a master of subtlety, but its latest billboard above Miami's I-95 freeway might be its boldest message yet. However, the new ad might be inviting more than just curiosity in the minds of viewers, as you will definitely get the wrong idea upon first glance. The billboard shows an underwater Shot on iPhone photograph of a shark, overlaid with playful Drawn on iPad cartoon sketches, which include a scuba diver and an octopus. There are no slogans, no descriptive text, and nothing that explains the visual, except for a small AT&T and Apple logo in the corner. With minimal context and a bold design, the billboard still made a huge impact - and not entirely for the right reasons.
Apple’s I-95 billboard in Miami sparks confusion as shot on iPhone ad looks very different from a distance
While the design of the ad is open to interpretation, viewers online were quick to notice that at first glance, the shape and placement of the graphics look decidedly phallic. This is a very surprising visual choice from the company, as it is known for its careful and calculated branding techniques. While we don’t know if it was intentional, the ad is certainly serving its true purpose - to turn heads and spark conversation, online and otherwise.
The billboard was shared on the Miami subreddit, and speculation around its meaning took different turns. The billboard stretched around 15 feet in length, which means that it did not go unnoticed by passing vehicles. From a close-up, the ad looks pretty innocent with a shark and scuba diver, paired with an octopus, but when glanced at from afar, it is very hard to tell what is going on. The billboard has been up for a week, and the design was also posted on Instagram. It appears that the company has nothing to say about the design choice.
However, the meaning behind the ad could be much simpler, with a playful sketch highlighting the iPhone's photography and the iPad's drawing capabilities. Apple has not shared an official statement regarding the design, and it will likely stay quiet and let the world wonder. Apple’s marketing team is having a hard time today, as the company’s official Support account on Weibo accidentally posted a teaser for the latest Galaxy Z Flip 7. While the ad was soon removed, users quickly noticed it and recorded the whole thing for the world to see.
