Companies are increasingly investing in taking leaps in AI and becoming the category leader. The tech giants are not only focused on bringing innovations but also attracting top talent from other companies to help escalate their ambitious approach to artificial intelligence initiatives. Meta is especially going with a more intense approach, stealing key members of companies like Apple by offering lucrative packages. Recently, we have seen many high-profile departures from Apple's AI team, and just when we thought the tech giant's department had suffered enough prominent employee exits, it lost another lead AI robotics researcher to Meta.
The talent wars seem to be getting more intense as another key figure from Apple's AI team has joined Meta
There seems to be an ongoing trend of talent wars, as many high-profile members of Apple's AI team have left to join Meta, which offers higher compensation in the more intense AI race. Now, the Cupertino giant has lost another key figure from its artificial intelligence division, Jian Zhang, who was the company's lead AI researcher, as per a Bloomberg report. The researcher specialized in robotics but has now left for Meta's Robotics Studio.
Looking at the past few months alone, Apple lost about a dozen of its AI specialists. In July, three additional members left the Foundation Models AI team of the company to join companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Meta, however, has specifically targeted Apple's talent pool by offering compensation packages that are higher than the industry standard. By offering lucrative packages, Meta has been able to build its team strongly and push further its AI goals.
Meta is clear in its strategy of building its position in AI, and that is to take on the top talent from tech giants that are established in the category and use the seasoned experts to accelerate its AI development, particularly in categories such as automation and robotics. Apple, on the other hand, is in the middle of ramping up its AI initiatives with a major focus on Siri improvements, so the timing of such moves is delicate. With the stream of talent leaving the company, there are questions about maintaining a competitive position in the constantly evolving AI market.
While Apple generally keeps things under wraps, its reluctance to reveal its AI vision could end up making the company suffer further in the tug-of-war for AI talent. Apple has thrived with its well-curated and polished moves in the past; whether or not this strategy is applicable in the rapidly changing field of AI is for Apple to evaluate. The competition is aggressively approaching technology and working hard to position itself as the leading AI company. Maybe it is high time for Apple to rethink its ways to avoid more talent drain, especially with the ongoing recruitment tactics by Meta.
