Apple is apparently trying to enhance the focal length and zoom capability of the camera setup on the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models by exploring the use of a teleconverter.

Smart Pikachu is now out with another tidbit regarding the upcoming Apple iPhone 18 variants, with the Google-translated version of the tipster's Weibo post as follows:
"The iPhone 18 series variable aperture prototype has been released. Teleconverters are also under evaluation."
While we already know that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models will feature a variable aperture lens, offering a more granular control over light intake and depth of field, this is the first time that we are hearing of the upcoming iPhone 18 models possibly supporting a DSLR-like teleconverter.
For the benefit of the uninitiated, a teleconverter is a magnifying lens of sorts that increases a camera's effective focal length, resulting in an enhanced zoom capability. However, as they reduce the light intake, such setups generally do not perform well in low-light conditions, resulting in a loss of sharpness and contrast.
While Smart Pikachu has a respectable track record on Android-related leaks, the tipster bears a less-than-stellar record on Apple iPhone-related ones.
