Apple Is Able To Reduce The Manufacturing Bill of Materials (MBOM) For The iPhone X's Successor; The 5.85" OLED Upgrade Will Cost 90% Of Its Predecessor In Term Of Materials Ordered
When anyone talks about the iPhone X, there are two things which immediately come to mind. Face ID and its price. Apple took the smartphone world with storm last year, after it debuted a True Depth camera setup on its first OLED iPhone. This enabled the device to unlock and carry out transactions with a user's facial details, rather than fingerprints. In fact, in a bold move, Apple chose to completely remove Touch ID from the equation, justifying this decision by touting the upgrade's accuracy and reliability.
However, these new features come with a hefty price tag. And it's this which has put off a lot of consumers. Sales are not what Apple expected and as a result, everyone in the tech world now looks at September 2018. Right now, rumors promise three new iPhones from Apple's end, with one LCD and two OLED devices. Additionally, analysts also believe that the LCD iPhone will be a fan favorite, surpassing the other two in terms of units sold and shipped.
Now, we've got some fresh speculation related to the upcoming devices, particularly the 5.85 inch iPhone expected to succeed last year's iPhone X. This device is a lot cheaper to acquire in terms of component costs, believes Luke Lin of Digitimes Research. As a result, its MBOM is 10% lower than the iPhone X, which in turn will allow Apple to make this device the cheapest of its 2018 smartphone portfolio. Lin also adds that initially, Apple planned to launch the LCD iPhone in this screen size bracket, due to rising OLED costs.
Finally, today's research report also adds that recent engineering samples for the 5.85" iPhone X OLED successor indicate that its components use materials with lower specifications than those of the other two. One critical point of differentiation is LPDDR memory, particularly when compared against the 6.1" LCD 2018 iPhone, due this September. If true, then this does not sound very good for other reports believing that we'll get an iPhone SE 2 this year.
