Apple is gearing up to seriously up the ante on the iPhone 18 Pro duo's camera-related bragging rights, as per the latest tidbits from a legendary Apple-focused leaker.
Apple is reportedly preparing three key innovations for the cameras of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, including variable-aperture and wider-aperture lenses, and professional-grade software features
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman is out with yet another scoop, detailing the camera-related innovations within the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which include:
- A main camera with a variable aperture, allowing you to adjust the focus or depth of field on the fly, resulting in better portrait or low-light shots.
- A telephoto lens with a wider aperture, unlocking substantially improved low-light photography.
- Software features that match professional-grade cameras, according to The Information, and aided by Apple's acquisition of Lux Optics.
We already know that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will come equipped with Samsung's M16 LTPO+ OLED tech, which is a native 10-bit panel that swaps out blue fluorescent OLED material for blue phosphorescent material, entailing a meaningful jump in efficiency that is further bolstered by the display's ability to dynamically adjust its refresh rate, notching it up to 120Hz for gaming or smooth scrolling and bringing it all the way down to 1Hz when viewing a static image.
Also, over the past few weeks, we've received persistent rumors regarding a supposedly smaller Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, achieved by moving some components of the Face ID module below the display layer. A MacWorld source adheres to this view, as does Ice Universe.
Even so, Digital Chat Station has continued to maintain that the iPhone 18 Pro duo will sport minimal changes in relation to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, with upgrades whittled down to the A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture camera setup, and a larger battery.
Additionally, the iPhone 18 Pro duo will come equipped with Apple's new C2 modem that unlocks support for 5G mmWave as well as a host of satellite-connectivity-related features.
Finally, the iPhone 18 Pro and its Pro Max companion will come in four distinct color options: Dark Gray, Dark Cherry, Light Blue, and Silver. And, to avoid the color fading issue that has plagued the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, Apple will use a new approach to refine the aluminum for the frame, which involves "lowering the fusion point of the mixture and preventing the formation of a resin structure on the electrode surface," unlocking enhanced corrosion resistance.
