The iPhone 16 launch is expected to happen in September, with Apple slated to introduce four new models to the masses. The unveiling typically means these handsets will run iOS 18 out of the box. Unfortunately, running the company’s latest and greatest update does not mean that any of the four models will come running Apple Intelligence immediately, which can complicate the announcement. However, a new report states that the iPhone 16 launch will not be delayed just because the technology giant is running late bringing a slew of generative AI features to the table.
Apple Intelligence was previously reported to come running on iOS 18.1
Instead of iOS 18, a previous report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentioned that Apple Intelligence will roll out with the release of iOS 18.1, meaning that it will arrive sometime after the iPhone 16 launch. Now, in the latest edition of his ‘Power On’ newsletter, Gurman states that this delay will not affect the announcement in September. However, how long do customers have to wait to try out those generative AI features? Based on the latest report, Apple Intelligence may not be ready until October, which may disgruntle a ton of potential buyers.
“These days, Apple typically releases the iPhone in September. But it faces a similar conundrum. Apple Intelligence — a core feature of the iPhone 16 — won’t be ready until October. This time, though, Apple is taking a different tack and won’t hold back the new hardware until the services are ready. I’m told that the iPhone launch will occur around the same time as last year — a quick look at the calendar makes Sept. 10 a probable date — and users will need to upgrade their new hardware to iOS 18.1 in October to get rolling with Apple Intelligence.”
Apple was previously reported to have targeted a 90-million shipment tally for the iPhone 16 family in 2024 alone, making it 10 percent higher than the iPhone 15, but this figure came before it was revealed that Apple Intelligence would come later. Regardless, a delay in the arrival of generative AI features should not be the deciding factor of the iPhone 16’s success because there are numerous upgrades to look forward to that should encourage customers to upgrade. These improvements range from the A18 chipset to display upgrades, design, camera, and much more.
It is possible that the delay will be worth it because a small preview of Apple Intelligence running on the M2 iPad Pro reveals that it is quite capable, being able to re-write and proofread almost 15,000 characters completely on-device, which is something that Samsung’s Galaxy AI cannot match or even come close to. We expect further improvements down the road, and knowing Apple’s penchant for delivering a pristine product, a delay should give the Cupertino firm some much-needed breathing room to refine various aspects of Apple Intelligence.
