The Dynamic Island replaced the notch when Apple first introduced it while officially announcing the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The company later standardized the feature for all iPhone 15 models, and it is likely that the iPhone 16 family will share the same design. However, before finalizing this one, the company was previously said to have explored different variations, and some mock-ups provide a visual representation of how different the software experience would have looked had those other options made it into the retail units.
One Dynamic Island design included being permanently stretched at the top of the iPhone’s display, but Apple believed it would have been too intrusive
Information provided to MacRumors allowed them to create different images of how the Dynamic Island would have looked had any one of these made the final cut. For instance, one of the mock-ups shows one variation where a pop-over menu would appear on the right side of the display, showing users important information such as the time, cellular and Wi-Fi signal strength, volume, and battery levels, plus other tidbits.
The shape of the pop-over menu was similar to a notch, and it would disappear when not in use. Apple probably scrapped this idea because the company believed that this Dynamic Island would take up valuable screen estate that could otherwise be used to swipe left and right. Another Dynamic Island design was hiding the notch behind an all-black status bar area at the top, a cosmetic effect we have seen in older Samsung smartphones such as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.
This choice would have contributed to improved battery life, but one drawback is that it would have taken up some top screen space, which would not have been the ideal design, at least according to Apple. Next up, we have a variation where the Dynamic Island would be permanently stretched across the top of the screen, but it was reportedly regarded as being too intrusive.
Other ideas included a whole row of system shortcuts in the Dynamic Island, with Apple eventually shifting to the design that the majority of us have come to know and love. The technology giant will ultimately retire the Dynamic Island, moving to an ‘all screen’ experience. However, it could be a while before we actually see the first iPhones bearing this change.
