Apple's foldable iPhone is a dream at this point, and while Samsung and Google have already offered their products, the iPhone maker is taking its sweet time. It is now being reported that the company is in the final stages of selecting a key display supplier for its foldable iPhone. Apple will potentially offer different versions of its foldable iPhone, possibly following Samsung's approach of a Flip and a Fold version.
Apple will select a display supplier for its foldable iPhone between February and April, with a heavy focus on durability and crease prevention
According to a new report from the Naver blog account "yuex1122," sources within Apple's supply chain suggest that the company is in the process of selecting a display supplier for the foldable iPhone. The report further states that Apple has maintained strict technical requirements for its future suppliers and will maintain the current industry standard considering thickness, size, and curvature radius. However, the company has demanded better durability and the prevention of creases, which is currently an issue on all foldable smartphones.
The report claims that some domestic manufacturers have made significant progress in meeting the company's standards. Apple will select a supplier between February and April of this year, as the final decision has not been made at this stage. While Apple is working on a wide range of foldable devices, including MacBooks, we suspect the latest report is oriented toward a foldable iPhone.
Prominent display analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously coined that Apple's foldable iPhone is currently in the planning stage. We are not familiar with the company's internal plans, but based on prior rumors, the foldable iPhone could be launched between 2025 and 2027. The Information has recently reported that Apple plans to launch a clamshell version of its foldable iPhone next year, which will be similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series.
As mentioned, the company is also looking to use foldable displays for its MacBook lineup, and while the exact form factor and utility remain unknown, the device is expected to feature a display size of 19.5 inches. Apple's main focus with its foldable iPhone and MacBooks is the crease on the display, which has been a nuisance for many smartphone makers, and it is still quite visible at certain angles.
The company is obviously late to the foldable game, as Samsung has been ruling the category for years now. Google has also introduced its Fold lineup, and both companies are moving forward with different approaches. It remains to be seen how Apple will position itself in the foldable sector and if a bigger display will bring notable benefits to the table. We will keep you posted with more details, so stay tuned.
