Apple plans to better compete with OpenAI and Google by bringing its own generative AI technology to light. However, the company is a little behind, as its competition has excelled over the past year in bringing various tools for developers and end users. It was previously reported that the company has a series of large language models in place, which will be available with the release of iOS 18 and other software updates. Now, it is reported that the company is working to make its own AI servers that use the M2 Ultra and M4 chips.
Apple building its own AI servers using the M2 Ultra chips, with plans to introduce the M4 version in 2025
According to information obtained from Jeff Pu's investor notes (via MacRumors), Foxconn is responsible for assembling Apple's AI servers using the M2 Ultra chip. It also has plans to use the M4 series of chips in developing AI servers later next year. A credible source previously reported that Apple is developing its AI servers with TSMC's 3nm chips. While it is still the beginning, the servers will be mass-produced in the latter half of 2025, which could use the company's upcoming M4 chips.
Apple's decision to make its own AI servers does not come as a surprise as the company is working to secure data centers to bolster forthcoming features that rely on cloud-based processing. It is worth noting that Apple's AI servers will be dedicated to the company's AI efforts. Recent reports have suggested that Apple will use on-device processing for its forthcoming AI utilities. Eventually, the company could switch to cloud-based processing, and the M4 series of chips could be the perfect candidate for handling the task.
We have previously covered that Apple is working on dedicated M4 chips for the new OLED iPad Pro, designed specifically to handle on-device AI processing. The company's plans also stretch to the iPhone, as the A18 Pro chip is reported to house additional Neural cores for the same task. This means that Apple is not only working on the AI functionality but also working on AI servers to better support it.
Jeff Pu also announced that Apple will showcase a number of AI tools at WWDC, which includes video editing, audio summarization, and more. Furthermore, the analyst has also detailed that Apple is working to make drastic changes in the iPhone 17 lineup, with a new 'Slim' model planned to replace the 'Plus.' While the iPhone 16 will come with a series of improvements focusing on AI, the iPhone 17 will take it to the next level.
Apple will announce the new iPad Pro models with an OLED display later today, and it could hint at some of the AI features coming later this year with iPadOS 18. Check out everything Apple will announce at its Let Loose event. We will be covering the event in extensive detail, so be sure to stick around.
