Anthropic Restores Claude Mythos and Fable Access as Commerce Department Lifts Export Controls It Never Explained

Jul 1, 2026 at 10:26am EDT

After a directive by the Commerce Department last month to disable access to its Claude Fable 5 AI model for foreign nationals earlier this month, Anthropic has confirmed that it will start restoring access today. The firm saw increased tensions with the US government after the Pentagon designated the firm as a supply chain risk and the Commerce Department prevented it from providing access to its Mythos-class models to foreign nationals.

Anthropic Says Mythos & Fable Restrictions Have Been Lifted

Anthropic's Mythos AI created quite a bit of stir after it was released to a working group. In an update in April, Anthropic explained that Mythos Preview was able to identify vulnerabilities in every major operating system and web browser, with some vulnerabilities being as old as 27 years.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei joined the conversation in a June blog post where he seemingly warned about the dangers of his own products. "In the last few months, however, the evidence of AI’s incredible power, as well as its risks, has become undeniable," he wrote.

"Perhaps the most emblematic example is Claude Mythos Preview and the discovery that frontier models pose very real risks to cybersecurity, creating the potential for disruption of the financial sector, critical infrastructure, and national security," Amodei added.

Anthropic Insists Jailbreaking Its Models Is Difficult

Soon after Amodei's post, the US government decided to restrict access to Anthropic's latest AI models for foreign nationals, even if they were working for the firm. The government communicated the decision through a letter and Anthropic immediately complied with the directives. The firm outlined that the government had not provided it with any clear reason behind the decision to suspend access to the Mythos and Fable products.

Two weeks later, on the 26th, the Commerce Department removed some restrictions placed on Myhos 5. Through the easing, Anthropic was allowed to provide the products to more than a hundred companies and some government agencies. However, Fable 5 was not a part of the easing.

Now, in an X post yesterday, Anthropic shared that it had received a notice from Commerce that removed the export controls on Mythos 5 and Fable 5. The firm added that it would begin restoring access today and would share additional updates regarding the latest development.

In a blog post shared soon after the announcement, the firm remarked that it had to suspend access for all users regardless of nationality since the timeframe of the order did not allow it to determine nationality. It also explained the safeguards in place to prevent 'jailbreaking' the model's safety guardrails and procuring harmful outputs.
