AmperOne Aurora SOC brings powerful AI Compute capabilities for handling AI training and inference workloads

Ampere, the company behind producing AmpereOne processors for AI computing has announced its newest and fastest processor to date. AmpereOne Aurora is the company's latest addition to its AmpereOne lineup, featuring 512 Ampere cores that promise to deliver over 3X the performance of the existing AmpereOne chips.

Key Features of AmpereOne Aurora:

The existing AmpereOne processors offer up to 192 high-performance cores, which makes the Aurora the flagship chip in the family. The AmpereOne family processors feature anywhere from 136 cores up to 192 cores with a system-level cache of 64MB. The 192-core CPU is built on a 5nm process node and operates at 400W of TDP.

In Q4 of 2024, Ampere is about to start its AmpereOne M series that too will consist of CPUs with up to 192 cores. However, unlike the current AmpereOne family that uses the 8-channel DDR5 platform, the AmpereOne will use a 12-channel DDR5 platform, which was showcased at Computex last year.

Existing AmpereOne Family

Coming to the AmpereOne Aurora, is particularly interesting since it triples the core count to 512. However, its other specifications or changes(if it has any) haven't been revealed in the official press release. The company did announce newer features and capabilities in AI computing that can be used for both AI Inference and Training for workloads like RAG and Vector Databases. Despite delivering the highest performance per rack, the processor will be air-cooled and can be deployed in existing data centers around the world.

The compatibility of Aurora can help the public cloud and enterprises leverage its AI computing capabilities without implementing any additional cooling efforts. Ampere says that the new processor is not only powerful but power-efficient as well. This puts AmpereOne Aurora in a strong position against Intel and AMD high-end chips for data centers, particularly due to the company's focus on AI acceleration and computing.
