AMD FSR 3

Today, out of the blue, Ascendant Studios announced the release of the much-awaited Immortals of Aveum update that introduces AMD FSR 3 support on consoles. This is the first time that a console game supports any frame generation technology.

Ascendant Studios accomplished the feat with the help of Enduring Games, an Austin-based studio that co-developed a lot of big titles, including Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5, Godfall for PS5 and the Epic Games Store, Knockout City for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox, the cross-platform play update for Borderlands 3, building the first Unreal Engine video-on-demand application with Crunchyroll for the Nintendo Switch system, cross-platform play support for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, cross-platform play & Nintendo Switch console support for Tribes of Midgard, multiplatform support for New Tales From the Borderlands, retargeting Bugsnax for the Nintendo Switch system.

The Immortals of Aveum update did not just add frame generation to consoles. The PC version of AMD FSR 3 was also updated on PC to improve both quality and performance.

AMD FSR 3 uses a combination of super resolution temporal upscaling technology and frame generation to deliver smoother framerates in supported games. This technology uses optical flow technology and temporal game data such as motion vectors to generate additional high-quality frames for a higher framerate. On PC, AMD FSR 3 has been updated to a newer, better version which further improves visual quality and performance of its temporal upscaling.

Moreover, this Immortals of Aveum update improves Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support across platforms and displays, which the developer says should improve frame pacing issues and even the occasional tearing issues. Lastly, this patch adds High Dynamic Range (HDR) display support on PC.

HDR is one of the IOA community’s most highly requested features and our team shared that desire to bring HDR to Immortals of Aveum. This meant taking the time to make the game look great in both SDR and HDR and balancing work on other unannounced projects. We wanted to provide players with gorgeous HDR visuals, and we’re delighted to offer a richer, more visually captivating journey through Aveum we hope all battlemages will enjoy.

Will this be the first of several console games to support AMD FSR 3? We'll have to check the quality of its implementation first to answer such a question. Stay tuned.
