Apple plans to equip the AirPods with tiny cameras as part of its efforts to offer extensive health-related functionality. Apple has consistently added new features to its AirPods lineup, including the hearing aid feature, which can be used as an over-the-counter alternative against prior devices. The FDA has approved the feature, and the accessory will give users more control over the functionality as it will be paired with an iPhone.
Apple could release new AirPods with tiny cameras in 2026, but analysts did not detail what they will be used for
The news was shared by Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, speculating that the company has not moved away from the possibility of offering small cameras on the AirPods. Note that the cameras would not be responsible for taking pictures or recording video, but it will be an infrared camera designed to measure different health-related metrics. While Gurman did not mention exactly what the cameras would be used for, we are sure that they are not for photography purposes.
This is not the first time that we have heard details about tiny cameras being added to the AirPods. Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that the company plans to mass-produce new variants of the accessory with infrared cameras, and the devices could see daylight by 2026. Kuo further elaborated that the infrared cameras would be similar to the Face ID receiver.
While the company's main aim is to enhance the health features of AirPods, the infrared sensor would also allow for a better spatial audio experience, especially with the Apple Vision Pro. "For example, when a user is watching a video with Vision Pro and wearing this new AirPods, if users turn their heads to look in a specific direction, the sound source in that direction can be emphasized to enhance the spatial audio/computing experience," according to Kuo.
The accessory could also be responsible for extending the controls on the AirPods with gesture controls. This could allow the accessory to be controlled through in-air gestures for better interaction through hand movements. As mentioned, the new AirPods with cameras could be launched in 2026 or 2027, which is when the company is expected to mass produce the accessory.
It remains to be seen if the company also plans to change the design of the AirPods, as it would house an additional sensor. We also believe that the change will arrive with the AirPods Pro models, and then it will trickle down to other models.
