The Typhoon Kalmaegi was a destructive cyclone that struck the Philippines on October 31, including the city of Cebu. The natural disaster dissipated on November 7, but not before it took several lives and caused devastating damage worth millions. In the midst of the chaos, an iPhone owner recounts how his home was reduced to rubble, but through a miracle, his smartphone survived a watery grave after being found three days in mud.

An Intel-powered MacBook that was gathering dust turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it was the only method of communication available for the iPhone owner

A Reddit user who goes by the handle ‘bricksandcanvas’ posted on the subreddit r/iphone, telling others that he survived an ordeal that nearly cost him his life. With his home destroyed by Typhoon Kalmaegi, his expensive belongings, which included what appears to be an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, fell into the flowing waters. Fortunately, once the flood subsided and he went looking for it again, the device was found in the mud.

Surprisingly, the ‘gooey’ mixture of dirt and water was resisted by the iPhone’s IP68 protection. Other than that, the owner says that it had no scratches and no visible damage. Being submerged in mud meant that the iPhone was also consuming battery life while in standby mode, but the owner did not provide details on this front.

What he did mention was that his M4 MacBook Pro did not survive the flood, because Apple’s portable Macs are not water-resistant. Once again, luck was on his side because he had an Intel-powered MacBook that had been sitting and catching dust, so he used it to connect to the internet and seek help.

“Oooh yeah. So I only had my macbook with me, and I walked barefoot around 3kms from my subdivision to the nearest hospital to get my foot dressed and stitched because I had a gaping wound that was bleeding. Since I had no cash, I literally had to beg and promise the physician that I will come back the next day to pay for the procedure lol. After the hospital, went to a local Dunkin shop and begged another person for data so that I can get onto wifi and message my mom to book me a hotel room where I can regroup.”

Manufacturers like Apple incorporate all sorts of protections into their products to help them get through the day and face the unforgiving elements. On this occasion, you have to admit that the real lifesaver was a machine no one was expecting: the Intel MacBook.
