The display technology transition from mini-LED to OLED is scheduled to happen late next year when Apple will unveil the M6 MacBook Pro series. The upgrade should also allow these machines to sport a thinner design, but a YouTuber has found evidence which hints that these two changes will not arrive for the smaller 14-inch model, pretty much baiting customers into spending the extra sum on the newer models.
The base 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro has a similar unique identifier to the M5 MacBook Pro, highlighting that it will not feature the OLED upgrade or a design change
In a previous leak, the base M5 MacBook Pro with the unique identifier J704 was potentially nearing its launch date, with YouTuber Vadim Yuryev now putting out a post on X, stating the M6 MacBook Pro will feature the model number J804. While this is nothing out of the ordinary, the interesting detail he stumbled upon was that the version getting treated to the OLED and slimmer chassis has the unique identifier K116, which is entirely different from J804.
This revelation suggests that the base 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro could retain a mini-LED panel, which is not so bad considering that critics have concluded this screen to be one of the best in the industry. However, those who want a superior configuration may have to spend an additional sum on both the OLED and sleeker design, which is a terrific strategy from Apple when you look at it from a business perspective, but not so much when a consumer’s savings are considered.
Now here is the puzzling part of the leak; if the base 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro will not be treated to the OLED and sleeker design, does that mean the increased unified RAM and storage configurations will have this hardware? Unlikely, and we feel that the M6 Pro and M6 Max MacBook Pro variants will have exclusivity over the two aforementioned changes, but there is yet another disadvantage to Apple’s potential strategy.
Potential buyers may have to wait a little longer to get the first OLED MacBook Pro
The M6 Pro and M6 Max versions will likely arrive the next year, which is 2027, since the M5 Pro and M5 Max have also been delayed because the YouTuber believes that Apple is introducing a new chip design that allows for separate CPU and GPU blocks. For now, we recommend preparing for the M5 MacBook Pro’s imminent release and will worry about the M6 MacBook Pro’s launch later.
