Whatsapp brings passkey support to iOS users

WhatsApp is one of the most popular internet messaging apps on the App Store, and while some users might prefer iMessage because of native support for some high-end features, the Meta-owned platform is gradually adding new features as well. It is now being reported that WhatsApp for iOS is releasing PassKey support on the platform. If you are unfamiliar with the feature, it will basically allow users to log into their accounts on iOS devices through Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.

WhatsApp finally adds PassKey support for iOS users, adding a new layer of security to protect accounts

Meta is adding a new layer of security in WhatsApp for iOS.  This will allow them to log into their accounts through the iPhone's Face ID, Touch ID, and passcode for authentication. Previously, users had to rely on a one-time SMS or an authentication code, which made the entire process quite tedious and susceptible to phishing or other kinds of attacks. With support for PassKey in WhatsApp, there basically exists no password to steal, as users can just log in through the aforementioned methods.

The entire process of logging into an account can no longer be intercepted by third-party sources, which secures the account as well as the contents of the platform, such as conversations and media. However, the feature is not forced, as users would have to enable it from the app's settings menu. If you are interested, all you have to do is open the settings app, select the Account section, and head over to the PassKey option. You can easily manage your account from there.

Note that Apple has been playing around with PassKeys since 2022 and it has just been made available on WhatsApp. PassKey supports a wide range of apps on the iPhone, and the list will only grow bigger. If you have an iPhone, PassKey support is only available on iOS 16 and all newer versions of the software. As for the rest of the Apple products, the security feature also supports iPadOS 16 and newer, macOS Ventura, and newer versions of the platform.

The industry has been quick to respond to Apple's security measures on the iPhone, which includes X, Google, TikTok, Microsoft, PlayStation, and a handful of additional companies adopting PassKey to protect user accounts. Gradually, more companies will jump on the bandwagon for extended security support.
