OpenAI announces GPT-4 Turbo with major changes and upgrades

OpenAI has seen fit to release its most significant update yet for ChatGPT at its first developer conference. The company announced substantial updates for the large language model, the GPT-4 Turbo. If you are unfamiliar, the latest update expands GPT-4 with extended context and an updated knowledge database.

OpenAI announces GPT-4 Turbo with a significantly larger context window, trained on information until April 2023

Two significant additions are coming with GPT-4 Turbo - the ability to understand larger context and access to newer information. The current version, GPT-4, has access to information before September 2021. With the latest update, the large language model, or LLM, is trained to offer solutions and information until April 2023. This means that the platform can now understand queries and provide a relevant response to recent events and news. This is a significant upgrade on its own.

Additionally, GPT-4 Turbo can now understand and see more data with a 128K context window. OpenAI claims that this translates to more than 300 pages of text, which you can use in a single prompt. This means the language mode will take more information from the question and devise a thorough response. Note that the company is releasing two variants of GPT-4, each with different context windows - 8K and 32K.

To make it easier for developers to use GPT-4 Turbo, OpenAI is also reducing the platform's price. Developers will now have to pay $0.01 per 1,000 input tokens. For reference, 1,000 tokens translate to almost 750 words. However, the output cost is $0.03 per 1,000 words. In comparison, OpenAI claims that GPT-4 Turbo will be at least three times cheaper than previous versions.

Furthermore, GPT-4 Turbo will also be able to take text-to-speech requests with DALL-E 3 integration. The system can still understand image prompts. The platform can better understand context and provide options for different coding languages, such as XML or JSON. Like Google and Microsoft, OpenAI will cover ChatGPT's features for Enterprise and developers with Copyright Shield.

OpenAI's latest GPT-4 Turbo update is a giant leap forward, currently available via an API preview. The Turbo variant of the model will be available in the coming weeks to the general public. However, the company did not announce the exact release date. It remains to be seen how developers and the general public can use the platform. Furthermore, Google could also upgrade Bard in the near future with similar updates. Still, at this stage, ChatGPT is undoubtedly ahead of the competition, with Apple only stepping into generative AI technology.
