VESA is bringing new performance levels to ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black to enhance performance metrics for high-end next-gen displays aimed at gamers and content creators.
VESA Adopts ClearMR 21000 and DisplayHDR True Black 1000 Standards for Upcoming Enthusiast Displays
VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) has announced new updates to its ClearMR and DisplayHDR True Black standards, which it will unveil at CES 2025. VESA is responsible for establishing standards for displays, and with rapid industry developments, the company has now improved its standards for upcoming high-end displays and gaming monitors.
The ClearMR standard and DisplayHDR True Black are now receiving various performance tiers that the display makers will utilize in their next-gen displays. Companies like GIGABYTE, MSI, LG, and Samsung have already started to equip some of these in their upcoming high-end enthusiast-grade displays for gamers and content creators. The Chairman of the VESA task group, Roland Wooster, says,
...The ability for OLED displays to achieve 1000 nit peak brightness for HDR content represents a significant breakthrough for the technology and a key cross-over point into content creation applications.
By adding a new 1000 performance tier to our DisplayHDR True Black standard, VESA assures consumers that certified products have successfully passed a robust set of test criteria and represent a premium standard for OLED HDR displays.
The DisplayHDR True Black is now getting a new performance level, which will introduce a 1000-Luminance performance level for OLED displays. Usually, OLED displays have a hard time reaching a high brightness level and achieving 1000 nits of brightness; with HDR-enabled, the OLED panels will get a new height in visual clarity.
VESA has added three new performance tiers for the ClearMR: ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000. The ClearMR reduces motion blur on displays, which is essential for clarity in content with fast movements. The newer CMR metric will provide a clear numerical value that will let users identify the intensity of motion blur in various ClearMR displays certified by VESA.
Several monitor manufacturers have started deploying these new standards in their enthusiast-grade displays, such as GIGABYTE, which will unveil its flagship gaming models in 2025 with the latest ClearMR standard. MSI, LG, and Samsung have also announced their upcoming monitor models with the latest VESA ClearMR standards, such as the LG 27GX79A, the first OELD gaming monitor with VESA CLearMR 21000 certification.
