Stunlock Studios is No Longer Making New V Rising Content, Instead Moving On To a New Game Set Within the World of V Rising

Two vampire characters, one holding a rifle and the other with a sword, stand in front of a full moon with castle spires visible in the background and the title 'V Rising' below.

Developer Stunlock Studios is moving on from one project to the next, as it announced to players today that it is no longer developing new content for its popular vampire survival game, V Rising. Instead, it is moving on to an entirely new project, though keeping things close to home, by placing this new title within the same world as V Rising.

The studio feels it has already achieved everything it wanted to achieve in V Rising, and now that we're nearly four years out from V Rising's early access release (and two years out from 1.0), it felt ready to move on to other gothic pastures.

"In the end, we’ve come to the conclusion that V Rising, in its current form, is something we’re proud of, and the journey to Dracula is a complete one as it stands," the studio wrote on V Rising's Steam page. Stunlock goes on to clarify that it is "not currently developing a new content update for V Rising," but it will continue to monitor the game's overall balance and fix bugs when necessary, in order to maintain a solid experience.

Though it does add that there is a casualty involved in its decision to move on from V Rising, which is that Stunlock is abandoning efforts to add modding support to the game. "After digging into it, we came to the conclusion that the game simply isn’t structured in a way that would allow us to provide mod tools at the standard we’d want for the community. The time spent exploring it wasn’t wasted, however, and what we learned will prove valuable for our future schemes and our new focus."

Which brings us to Stunlock's next focus, which is an entirely new project set within the world of V Rising. "Put plainly, Stunlock Studios is working on a new game set in the beautiful, strange, and gothic world of V Rising. This will be our most ambitious project yet in our 15-year history of making games, and we can’t wait to begin this journey with you. The hunt for blood is about to evolve."

Stunlock doesn't go on to say whether this new project will be an immediate sequel to V Rising, but it does call out how much it is experimenting with this project.

"We’ve been experimenting in ways we haven’t been able to for a very long time, exploring fresh ideas unbound by our previous limitations. With the foundation of knowledge we built alongside you, we’re able to craft a bolder vision for the future of our Vampire world. Right now, we’re set about creating the architecture that can support our new and wild ambitions, and one we think will be able to support yours as well."

"Our next game will invite you to explore your darkest whims in a world of greater depth, danger, and mystery than ever before. The odyssey of the Vampire continues in an experience that feels both familiar and strikingly new. We take on this challenge with great respect for what it demands as we set out to build something extraordinary, and when the time comes, your feedback, as always, will help guide us as we refine and improve."

It'll be interesting to see what Stunlock Studios has planned. When V Rising hit 1.0, Wccftech's Francesco De Meo praised it in his 9/10 review, writing, "V Rising may not have the deepest survival game mechanics around, but that is hardly a problem. The experience crafted by Stunlock Studios manages to masterfully weave together mechanics from very different genres to provide an experience like any other on the market. While solo players may find the experience becoming a little stale over time, everyone else will find plenty of reasons to remain in this world, whether it's to perfect their characters or build the most haunting vampire castle ever seen."
