A user has tested ASUS's newly released ROG Equalizer 16-pin cable on an RTX 5090, and reports cooler temps & lower voltage drops.
ASUS's ROG Equalizer 16-Pin Cable Works As Intended In User Test On An RTX 5090, Could Become The Baseline For Future RTX GPUs
Over at Chiphell Forums, a user has acquired an ASUS ROG Equalizer 16-pin cable, which was recently released. The user got the cable bundled with his ROG STRIX 1200W PSU, which is among the PSU line that will come bundled with the cable:
- ROG Thor 1000W Platinum III
- ROG Thor 1200W Platinum III
- ROG THOR 1200W Platinum III Hatsune Miku Edition
- ROG THOR 1200W Platinum III White Edition
- ROG Thor 1600W Titanium III
- ROG-STRIX-1000P-GAMING
- ROG-STRIX-1000P-GAMING-WHITE
- ROG-STRIX-1200P-GAMING
- ROG-STRIX-850P-GAMING
For testing, a Gigabyte RTX 5090D AORUS Master Ice graphics card was used and stress tested in Furmark, which pushes the GPU enough to hit its 600W power limit. For comparison, the user also ran the card on a ROG Thor 1200W II with a stock 16-pin cable.
The difference was seen almost immediately under a thermal imager, with the stock cable running at 59.8 degrees Celsius while the ROG Equalizer 16-pin cable ran at just 50.7 degrees Celsius. That's a difference of almost 10 °C.
This is due to the design of the ROG Equalizer, which reduces cable temperature and helps it stay within the 105 °C threshold by balancing power delivery across all pins, reducing the chances of current/power imbalance that may occur if the 16-pin cable isn't properly connected or has been used over long periods under stress.
The user also reports that the voltage drop using the ROG Equalizer cable was much lower than that of a stock 16-pin cable. The stock cable reported a voltage difference of 0.08-0.14V, whereas the ROG Equalizer cable maintained close to 12V with a minimal difference of 0.005-0.04V. This is well within the safe limit of 16-pin cables, which should ideally be around +5% or 11.6V+.
ASUS has already stated that ROG PSUs bundled with the ROG Equalizer 16-pin cable will feature a higher price. The cable will also be available for purchase separately through a "Preferential Purchase Program" for existing ROG PSU owners at a more favorable price point. It is stated that the cable should cost around 100 RMB or around $15 US, which is decent.
