Apple products have always been very lucrative due to their resale value and demand. We have seen various thefts and snatching incidents from the App Stores in the past. It is now being reported that a former UPS worker has been charged with stealing Apple products worth more than a million dollars from a warehouse in Canada.
A former UPS worker stole more than $1.3 million worth of Apple products from the warehouse
As mentioned, Apple products retain their value for months and even years after their launch, which makes them a lucrative reselling target. As per reports from Global News and Winnipeg Free Press in Canada, a former UPS worker named Orville Beltrano has been accused of stealing more or less 866 Apple products from the warehouse. Orville worked as a supervisor at the location for more than a decade, and it appears that he was swapping products on Kijiji, Canada's local platform, for buying and selling on a consumer level.
The entire ordeal came to light after UPS decided to track down why a number of products went missing from the warehouse in Winnipeg. UPS went undercover to install Surveillance cameras to catch the accused in action, and the investigation discovered that Beltrano was indeed stealing Apple products from the pallets in the warehouse, which were originally supposed to be shipped to Ontario. Beltrano reportedly took 120 iPhones in a single day earlier this year in January before UPS raised concerns regarding the inventory and implemented preventive measures.
According to the news source, Beltrano deposited upwards of $232,000 in his bank accounts before he was fired and arrested on the same day on January 22. Folks in charge of investigations discovered $9,000 in cash, a MacBook, and $9,000 worth of jewelry in his car when he was arrested. Beltrano admitted to stealing Apple products as well as the jewelry and swiped the items to buy a home worth $680,000 along with an Audi hatchback worth $60,000.
Beltrano has been charged with theft under and over $5,000, along with property possession obtained through crime over $5,000 and the proceeds of crime, with persecutors asking the court to seize his house, cash, vehicles, and more. As mentioned, Apple products are quite lucrative due to their high reselling value and their demand, which can last for years without much depreciation. This is not the first time that we have covered details on stolen Apple products, as we have previously reported that robbers stole a handful of Apple products from the Apple Store by breaking in through the bathroom wall.
