TSMC Provides An Update On 2nm Process, Mass-Production On-Track For 2025

TSMC provided an update on its 2nm process, revealing that the node is on track for 2025 & has successfully achieved its yield-rate targets.

TSMC's 2nm process node technology is considered the next semiconductor marvel, considering the massive performance gains it will bring. Firms like Apple and Intel have already set their sights on TSMC's 2nm for integration into their mainstream products. With that, TSMC clarified the situation on the developments in the 2nm process at the Symposium 2024, claiming that the node is progressing according to the set schedule and that the obtained yield rates are satisfactory and ready for mass adoption.

TSMC has revealed that their plans for the N2 process are on track and that N2P development is next, suggesting that the 2nm lineup is up and thriving. In terms of the yield rates, the firm disclosed that their GAA (Gate-All-Around) technology, which has been employed with the 2nm process, has managed to achieve 90% of the target performance and that the associated 256 Mb SRAM device has seen 80% of yield rates, which is massive for the adoption of the process because the Taiwan giant has managed to keep the average yield rates under the set industry thresholds.

Detailing a bit on the 2nm process, it is said that Apple is seen as a huge customer for the firm's node, as just recently, the Cupertino giant's COO Jeff Williams paid a visit to Taiwan to secure supply. It is reported that the standard's first debut will be at Apple's M5 chips for Macs and future iPad models, along with the A19 pro, which is said to debut with the iPhone 17 models. Apart from that, Intel has expressed its intentions to integrate the process with its future Nova Lake CPU lineup, so overall, TSMC's 2nm process is on track for large adoption.

Well, it looks like TSMC has managed to gain superiority with their N2 lineup this time as well since competitors like Samsung still haven't provided an update on their respective 2nm products, but we'll have to wait and see for now.
