TikTok has managed to stay in the headlines for quite some time, whether it is for being owned by the Chinese company ByteDance and putting the national security of the U.S. at risk or for the pressure it has been facing to implement age-appropriate restrictions to reduce the adverse impact on teenagers. Its business operations in the United States have remained controversial, and the government and law enforcement have been trying to ban the company or force divestiture.
The federal law banning the platform will go into effect this Sunday. While the restrictions do not require the app to be completely shut down, the company is reported to plan on completely shutting down in the U.S. While there are chances that the ban may be extended until the fate of the platform is decided, the chief executive of TikTok now plans to attend Donald Trump's inauguration.
The chief executive of TikTok, Shou Chew, plans to attend President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration
This week has been buzzing with TikTok, the potential selling off of its US operations, and the impending ban to be imposed by the government on the platform. While some of the reports stand true, others have been debunked by Chinese officials, such as the one where Elon Musk might potentially be acquiring TikTok US. It has not been long since we covered the company's plan to completely shut down its operations in the United States amidst the ban that will go into effect on Sunday. We have also heard about a US senator seeking a 270-day extension under a new law for the ban.
While it is still to be seen what becomes of TikTok, now reports are coming in about Shou Chew, CEO of TikTok, attending Trump's inauguration. As per the New York Times, Shou Chew would be joining the likes of other big names such as Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk and will be seated in a position of honor on the dais, where all the important guests and family members would be seated. It is also said that OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman has made donations to the inaugural committee and might also be joining in for the ceremony.
While TikTok has yet to comment on the attendance at the inauguration and the fate of the company, it is surprising to see a shift in Mr. Trump's take on TikTok and the ban on the app. Initially, he was the one pushing for stringent measures against the platform, but later, he warmed up to the app, which could be due to the vital role the platform played in political engagement. Given its growing significance, not just among users but for political campaigns as well, a ban could cause a major uproar in the community.
TikTok's chief executive attending the inauguration could be an attempt to foster goodwill and open dialogue that moves past the geopolitical tensions and could determine the platform's future in the country.
