The Ryzen 7 9800X3D has officially replaced the Ryzen 7 7800X3D as the fastest gaming CPU on the planet, and for $479, it offers incredible value for the level of performance you get out of it. Unfortunately, the sheer demand for the processor meant that it soon went out of stock across major retailers, both offline and online, including Amazon, which means that the only way to get a unit is to pay an inflated price, which, right now, is $699.99. While forking over a premium is never justified, it is just the world we live in.
Thankfully, we also live in a world where there are routine discounts on other PC parts, such as motherboards. The X870 chipset offers a seamless installation of the 9800X3D, where you do not have to perform a BIOS update as you must on previous-generation boards to get the CPU functional. Best of all, these X870 motherboards will not considerably add to the total, and we have a total of three models from three different companies; MSI’s PRO X870-P WIFI, GIGABYTE’s X870 Eagle WIFI7 and ASUS’ PRO X870-P WIFI.
All three of them support the standard ATX form factor, so regarding size, these will be compatible in the majority of cases unless you prefer making those portable but exceptionally powerful mini-ITX builds. If you want to save the most money, we recommend getting the GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7, which currently retails for $229.99 and offers all the bells and whistles that you would expect from a premium motherboard. Moreover, we have included this model as it supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, and the difference between the Wi-Fi 6 version is a measly $10.
Next, we have the MSI PRO X870-P WIFI, which is available for $239.99 and offers more or less the same features as the GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7, with the addition of a couple of ports here and there. ASUS is typically known to charge a premium for its parts, which is why the PRO X870-P WIFI is the most expensive out of all the models at $249.99. At this point, a difference in pricing is so minuscule that the only deciding factor is which brand is preferred. Most consumers would opt for ASUS since it is a global firm with a major presence across a multitude of countries.
Then again, if you do not possess an affinity towards acquiring the latest and greatest hardware, you can still get the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and it will still deliver incredible gaming performance compared to the competition. The biggest advantage here is that the motherboards compatible with the 7800X3D are significantly cheaper than the newer X870 ones, so that is something to keep in mind when evaluating your budget.
