The Witcher 3 Songs Of The Past Promises To Match Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty Scope, While Fans Discover New Information

Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, stands poised with a sword against a dark forest backdrop, with the title 'Songs of the Past' prominently displayed.

Following months of rumors, The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past expansion was officially announced yesterday. Set for release in 2027, 12 years after the launch of the base game, the new expansion will see players accompany Geralt of Rivia in yet another adventure. While details are scarce at the moment, and will only come in late Summer, some eagle-eyed fans took a good look at the expansion's key art, proving that it hides more information behind some apparently small details.

With a new image shared on the series' official subreddit, user KvasirTheOld summarized some interesting findings regarding the sword Geralt is holding, which is likely not his own, as he is carrying his two swords on his back. The sheath of the sword he is holding is almost identical to Ciri's Zireael, with only a minor difference. The sword is likely a silver sword, sharing the same shape as Mastercrafted Silver Swords and a few others. The crossguard is also typical for Silver Swords.

Going by these interesting details, it is easy to predict that The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past will indeed all be about Ciri, and how Geralt will "pass the torch," so to speak, a passing likely symbolized by the silver sword, which could be Ciri's. This would fall perfectly in line with the rumors that said that the expansion is meant to bridge the gap with The Witcher 4, which will star Ciri.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time this sword has appeared in some of the game's official artwork. As noted by Zubedoo, Geralt was shown holding the sword in an artwork celebrating Belleteyn, the universe's Spring festival based on the real-world Celtic celebration of Beltane. This festival holds a certain significance for Geralt in Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, as it is during one of these festivals that he meets Yennefer again during one of their off periods, and it's after this encounter that he decides to finally embrace his destiny and claim Ciri as his child surprise.

While all of these details are very interesting, the question every fan of the series is asking right now is how big The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past will be. Although details are not yet available, CD Projekt Red's Paweł Sasko shared a reminder of their definition of expansions, using an interview with Idris Elba conducted before the launch of the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion. "Big. Massive. Monster," the actor said in the interview to describe the expansion, so we should definitely expect something of similar scope.

No matter what, there's little doubt that CD Projekt Red and co-developer Fool's Theory will deliver a fine experience with The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past. Hopefully, it will be enough to tide fans over until the launch of the next entry in the series, which has yet to be dated.
