The U.S. Will Be ‘Cooked’ in the AI Industry if It Continues Adopting a Closed-Source Approach, Warns Hugging Face CEO

OpenAI launches two new open-weight models

While America leads the AI race, China is claimed to have one edge: the development of an open-source AI ecosystem, driven by efforts to create models available for everyone.

Experts Argue That Open-Source AI Models Are The Way To Go For America, But Big Tech Isn't Ready For The Pivot

There's always a debate on whether the US should opt for an 'open-source' environment with its AI models. Interestingly, one of the objectives of President Trump's 'AI action plan' is to foster an environment where LLMs are available for everyone, but it seems like AI giants are still reluctant to pivot towards an open-source structure. Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue commented on this matter on X, claiming that without 'sharing science' around AI models, the US cannot create a collaborative structure with AI, giving nations like China an edge.

The context of his comments came from an open-source AI model from the Chinese food delivery company Meituan. The firm recently showcased an innovative MoE model with 560 billion total parameters. This model is targeted towards automating workflows like customer service and, more importantly, contributing to the 'open-source AI' boom in China. Quoting details of the model, Hugging Face CEO claimed that America's AI management should get together to share the science behind their models, instead of keeping it closed-source.

One key reason the US is inclined towards a closed-source approach is that the nation is making colossal investments into AI training and inferencing, and firms like OpenAI and Anthropic rely on subscriptions or API-based revenue to generate income through such models. Since AI is seen as a massive business in the West right now, the likes of Gemini and others need to keep their advanced LLMs under lock and key to ensure they can create differentiation between competitors, but there is a tradeoff to pay.

There are several advantages of open-source models that we won't get into, but one important factor to consider is that China is leading the race for an open-source AI ecosystem since the nation has been developing models using this approach for several years now. While OpenAI has recently made efforts towards open-source LLMs with gpt-oss, it is evident that there's a dire need for the US AI industry to reconsider its stance.
