As of yesterday, exactly eight years have passed from that Bethesda E3 2018 when Todd Howard showed teasers for both The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield. That move was specifically geared toward reassuring Bethesda fans that they weren't abandoning single player games with the release of the multiplayer game Fallout 76. However, in the years to come, Howard would make it clear that he really prefers not to talk about any of his games until they're relatively close to launch. In fact, he'd actually rather show them and then say 'they're available now', which happened with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
That, of course, clashes with the marketing plans of Bethesda and Microsoft's Xbox, which bought Bethesda back in 2021. On that note, it's perhaps not much of a surprise that an update on The Elder Scrolls VI landed yesterday from Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, who confirmed to Variety that he had seen the game and that it's looking "amazing" so far.
I would say one of the more challenging balancing acts of someone in a job like mine is balancing that you want to go show the world all the cool stuff you’re working on, and you want to get them excited early, but we also know that we want to wait till the right moment. And when you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got. And also that when you show the game, you’re also giving them a promise of, hey, it’s coming soon. So I can tell you, having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen “Elder Scrolls” playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time.
The Elder Scrolls VI was never going to be a 2026 game. It might be a 2027 game, though that'd be a bit surprising, given that Starfield launched in September 2023. A few months ago, Todd Howard said it would be "a while yet", while he confirmed that they're pushing the technology further with the Creation Engine 3 and that they were happy with how that's going.
