Have you ever wondered what is, officially, the best OST in the history of gaming? Of course, you have; we've all heard fantastic music and scores from classics like Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Silent Hill 1, Silent Hill 2, and even titles like Medal of Honor are just fantastic from start to finish. However, with such a stacked list to choose from - even titles I haven't mentioned, like the outstanding (and by this, I mean suicide-inducingly crap) Xenoblade Chronicles X - the question inevitably is, "What game has the best soundtrack ever?"
Well, my dear friends, I can give you the answer. First, I will link to some tracks from some of the best soundtracks ever, but they are not the best, and I will give you a little reason why they are so good.
Yes, this is an April Fool's post, but I am still deadly serious. Don't test me.
Medal of Honor - Main Theme
Have you ever watched Band of Brothers? No? Get out. For those of you who remain, the soundtrack of this game feels like it comes from a WW2 epic. It feels like it belongs alongside the towering heights of Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan. There isn't a single second of this track that doesn't feel epic.
Final Fantasy 9 - Melodies of Life
Okay, this was a difficult one. Final Fantasy is a series of outstanding soundtracks. Even the objectively poor games (I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy XIII) had some great and catchy songs (Sunleth Waterscape), but when you're picking a song that hits you from the series, you can't get better than Melodies of Life. Eyes on Me from VIII and the Final Fantasy Theme are certainly there, but they don't make my eyes leak.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - V-Rock
Just the whole station. I needn't say more. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the other radio stations, except Wildstyle and Espantoso. This was a close contender, but it did miss out.
Silent Hill 2 - Theme of Silent Hill 2
Hearkening back to the theme of the original Silent Hill, this also incorporates Laura's theme from earlier in the game, but making it far more uplifting in a way that matches the culmination of the game and James' arduous travels from the eponymous town.
The Best Game Soundtrack Ever
So, here we come to it. The moment that everybody has been waiting for - where you find out the best soundtrack ever released for a video game and the reason why. First, let's go for Just a Day, the song of the second-best opening video of any game ever (the best is Red Alert 2). The mix for Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is exceptional and knows how to get you revved up for a racing game.
As do the other two songs, Buck Rogers and Seven Days in the Sun. I must say, Gran Turismo (the original) nearly took this spot, as it has FOUR tracks by Feeder. Still, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec also had... I'm not sure; maybe something else. Frankly, I remember using the music options that let me pick which songs would play, and I got the list down to about five or six at most.
So yes, there you have it. You now know the best soundtrack in video game history, and as a bonus, you also got to know the best opening cinematic in gaming history. Do you agree with what I've said? Of course, you do, but please tell me about other great soundtracks in the comments below.
