Tech Enthusiasts Just Equipped The Apple iPhone Air With A Physical SIM Card Tray

Apple's iPhone Air has the highest depreciation of any iPhone model launched since 2022

If you really want your eSIM-only Apple iPhone Air to work with a physical SIM card, you can do so with a bit of innovative juggernaut. Of course, doing so would likely nullify the warranties on your ultra-slim iPhone.

To equip your Apple iPhone Air with a physical SIM card tray, simply swap the original haptic feedback system

Given the iPhone Air's ultra-slim form factor, it is understandable that Apple would launch it as an eSIM-only model. In fact, with the iPhone Air, Apple spurred a broader trend towards eSIMs in China, a country that hitherto had remained quite shy of the technology due to a host of intrinsic factors.

However, some tech enthusiasts have now figured out a practical way of equipping the model with a physical SIM card tray.

To do so, simply remove the original vibrator motor that powers the iPhone Air's haptic feedback mechanism and replace it with two new components:

  1. A smaller vibration motor to provide only the very basic haptic feedback.
  2. A physical SIM card tray and its slot assembly, which allows the SIM card to actually work within the phone.

Of course, for the 99 percent of iPhone Air users, this solution makes zero sense, especially when it entails the nullification of the phone's warranty. Also, it is unclear what effect this change would render on the phone's already-diminutive battery capacity. After all, a smaller vibration motor should produce a positive effect, but the SIM card tray's slot assembly can produce a negative effect on the margins.

Even so, this can be a very creative vanity project, provided that you have a substantial disposable income - such that the warranty nullification and the attendant reduction in the phone's residual value mean nothing to you - and paired with some technical skills.
