After KRAFTON's disappearance from the Subnautica 2 Steam page spurred speculation that KRAFTON would no longer be publishing the game and that perhaps developer Unknown Worlds could be looking to split from the publisher in the future, the studio has cleared the air. In an interview with Eurogamer, two members of the Unknown Worlds team were able to provide some clarity and insight on the situation, the long and short of which is that yes, KRAFTON is still co-publishing the game.
We can only speculate what will happen between Unknown Worlds and KRAFTON in the long-term now that the CEO of Unknown Worlds just beat the CEO of KRAFTON in a long legal battle that drew a lot of attention to both studios for most of last year. The only sure thing is that the relationship between the two companies will never be the same. Still, in the case of Subnautica 2, they are co-publishing the game together.
"I'm not sure I have that good an insight into the Steam page, but what I can say is we're co-publishing the game [with KRAFTON], so they're not not the publisher anymore," said design lead Anthony Gallegos. Creative media producer Scott MacDonald added, "As you can tell with KRAFTON people in this call, we're working with them for all promotional material, it's a co-publishing thing."
"It's just one of those things on Steam I think that just happened. It may have blown up a little bigger than it was meant to, but you know, KRAFTON are still very much helping us with the launch of the game," a comment that Eurogamer says was "concurred" by the KRAFTON representative also present for the interview.
KRAFTON's initial statement on the matter when players became aware of the change was, "KRAFTON is currently focused on successfully supporting the Early Access launch of Subnautica 2. We have nothing further to share at this time." That didn't explain much, but at least MacDonald and Gallegos' comments clear up the core question of whether or not KRAFTON is still supporting the game as a publisher.
Which, we learned yesterday, will finally arrive in Early Access on PC later this month, on May 14, 2026.
