Last week, we learned more information on the Steam Controller via an early review by YouTuber Techy Talk that went live before the end of the embargo. Japanese publication 4Gamer has made the same mistake today, and its early review confirmed the controller will be released in just a week, on May 4.
While the publication already took their early review down and their social media post promoting it, it wasn't swift enough to prevent some eagle-eyed Reddit users from saving both. Gaming Leaks and Rumors user ___Steve managed to save the images that accompanied 4Gamer's review, which offer a great look at the box and controller from multiple angles. Although the controller itself looks far from the slickest around, Valve seems to have prioritized functionality over aesthetics, as evidenced by the aforementioned early glowing review from Techy Talk.
As the Steam Controller was announced alongside other Valve hardware like the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame VR headset, it was expected that all three would release at the same time. However, as we have heard a lot of chatter about the controller, but nothing about the other two, you shouldn't get your hopes up for all three new pieces of Valve hardware to release on May 4.
Considering the current situation of hardware prices, and with Valve confirming that the Steam Machine's release schedule (and possibly pricing) has been affected by the high prices of RAM, having reviews out to help push a system that could have become a harder sell since its announcement, and if the Steam Machine would have been in the hands of reviewers, we would have heard the same chatter we are hearing on the Steam Controller.
Still, stranger things have happened in the past, so there's still a chance a surprise could be on the way. Still, it's better not to hold your breath for it.
