Star Wars Battlefront II Sales To Bounce Back, Analyst Believes; Optimistic About EA’S Upcoming Titles

Star Wars Battlefront II sales are expected to bounce back following weaker-than expected sales, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter predicts.

While the Battlefront II loot box controversy and progression system has hurt initial domestic sales, Pachter believes that sales will pick up again due to the game’s appeal, and the recent release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. “The sell-off in recent weeks appears overdone,” the analyst wrote in a note to investors. “Although Star Wars Battlefront II had a weaker-than-expected debut in terms of its domestic physical sell-through, we believe that the loyalty of the Star Wars fan base, the game’s appeal as a holiday gift, and the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15 will result in sales of the game bouncing back in the December retail month”, he added.

EA’s shares have taken a deep blow following Battlefront II’s social media outrage, but Pachter suggests that initial expectations for FY2019 might be too conservative given the publisher’s game lineup, which includes titles such as Anthem and the next Battlefield.

“The initial catalyst was weaker-than-expected Q3:18 guidance, which suggested sagging expectations for Star Wars Battlefront II,” Pachter wrote. “Downward pressure was exacerbated by criticism of the title’s MTX model, which EA pulled before launch, as well as a broader sector sell-off.”

“The Street’s FY:19 expectations may prove to be too conservative given EA’s loaded lineup,” he added.

Star Wars Battlefront II was released back in November of last year. EA’s Anthem is said to release by the end of this year.
