Sony's latest PS5 consoles have received a new and silent update to the Liquid Metal TIM, offering reduced spillage/leak & better cooling.
New Sony PS5 Models Adopt PS5 Pro-Like Liquid Metal TIM Application For Better Cooling & Less Spillage/Leaks
Sony's PS5 consoles, such as the standard PS5 and PS5 Slim, have been prone to Liquid Metal TIM spillage. While Liquid Metal should offer better cooling performance for the SoC, it is also much more difficult to handle during system disassembly and is prone to spillage.
To prevent this leak, a spacer is found next to the SoC die (APU) on the interposer. Despite this, many PS5 owners have still had issues with the Liquid Metal TIM. The main models that had this issue were the Sony PS5 standard and PS5 Slim (CFI2016).
Sony did address the issue on the PS5 Pro, which featured deeper grooves and a slightly different Liquid Metal TIM layout for the main SoC. This design offered protection against leaks and spillage, and it turned out to be a good and easy solution.
Well, it looks like the same Liquid Metal TIM application is coming to Sony PS5 and PS5 Slim consoles. As reported by @Modyfikator89, the newest "CFI-2100/2200" models of the PS5 have received this update & this can be confirmed by looking at the lines engraved within the Liquid Metal TIM area. If the surface is flat, then that means your PS5 is based on an older model which didn't receive this update.
Now those of you running an older model, if you don't face any major issues such as overheating, etc, on your Sony PS5 console, you shouldn't be worried much, and if you do, you can ask a professional or any console repair shop to reapply the Liquid Metal TIM for you as applying it yourself isn't just hard but also tricky.
And for those in the market for buying a new PS5 console, well, you should be searching for the "CFI-2116 B01Y" model to get the revision.
